Jamming Gloves: An Art...

First off I would like to mention a new product we have just started selling through our web shop. Our strapping tape>> is the best I have come across so far its strong, hard wearing (so minimal holes mid route), its thin enough to bind pulley's and not restrict movement, it has no "feathered edge" so it doesn't split mid route, it comes in 5cm wide roles (wider than anything out their currently) so you can split it and still have plenty of room for to make gloves and it is a 14m role over the usual 10. Generally it's more "bang for your buck" as they say... I think, however the major bonus is its Only £5.99 this is cheaper than anything around at the moment, so that's fatter, longer and cheaper than any other on the market... Win win situation don't you think.

Right down to making the gloves, this took me a while to work out as you probably know when you've done something so many times you forget how you do it and just do it. This method is not the only one and some may say not the best, however this is one that I find both effective and economical (Some methods take nearly half a role per pair). Look at the pictures on the right hand side and below, they will help you visualise the glove (arty farty words) so hear go's...

Start by tearing 3 strips in decreasing lengths, the longest is placed from the joint on your index finger to just past your wrist (as pictured), the second piece wants to be shorter and overlap the first, then the third shorter and again overlapping the second. Make shore the third piece covers the heel of your hand (this helps protect you when your fist jamming for glory). Fold the ends over to stop the tape from fraying ripping or getting in your way.

Next step is to add some padding, to stop any nasty crystals ripping your hand open. Tear 3 strips 2 the same length and the 3 rd a little longer (all becomes apparent). Place them across the back of your hand. First place two next to each other again overlapping them after this place the longer one over the join.   This stops the tape from being pulled around when your jamming and also offers some protection. If there's a particularly bad crystal that you know about this is when you would put in a guard plate, a bit of cereal box works quite well.

If you are planning on fist jamming then a thumb guard is a good idea, if not then just skip this bit and go straight to binding. The thumb guard is really hard to get rite, too tight or too much tape and you can't move your thumb too little or loose and it will be off your thumb and in your way within 10 minutes. The first step is to take a piece of tape that will span from the middle of your thumb to your wrist then put a split to about half way down. Then place this along the back of the thumb either side of the split tape going round the thumb. Repeat this process as and then fold the bottom as show in the picture. Next we take 2 pieces of tape about 4 inches long but that are about 2.5cm wide (if you split a piece of our tape in two that's perfect). Now place one end on the inside bottom (back of your hand) of your thumb, wrap it round the back (into your palm) then back round to meet its self repeat this process with the other bit of tape but start at the opposite side (not gospel but I like it to match). The last bit is to take another bit of tape and rap it round your thumb covering the top of the previously applied tape, now you have a thumb guard that won't fall off.

Now the last stage the binding. Start on the inside of your hand (you can grip the tape then) rap it round your hand making shore that you clench you fist as you go round the top and open it out as you go over your palm. This stops the tape from getting too tight and restricting movement/ circulation which in turn causes your hands to pump out. When you have passed the start point 2 or 3 times cross over the back of your palm and wrap the tape round your wrist. Try not to get any ridges in the tape because this can dig and it wrecks if you're not careful. When you wrap it round your wrist make the area your taping as big as possible, this stops the tape tightening again.

After 2 passes take the tape round the back of your thumb (even if you don't have a thumb guard, it stops the glove from slipping or pulling off your hand), when you go round your thumb twist the tape and bring it back over its self and do one more pass to make shore it doesn't pull up mid route.

The last thing to do is squash the palm binding down so it's not too big, and there you have it, a bomb proof glove of war.

Now all you have to do is go and find some dry cracks and send to glory.

Enjoy....
